"We are making strong steps every day and I believe that we will get to the point where cancer will no longer be taking people's lives." – Dr. Shumei Kato

This was sent to me by my mom's oncologist in June. For me it sums up the quality of care, vision, and initiative that the Moores Cancer Center team has. And why it is so incredibly necessary.

When I was asked to be this year’s event artist, I was honored. It gave me a great opportunity to help raise money for Moores Cancer Center as a tribute to my mom. Scripps Pier was her favorite place to sit when we would have a beach day in La Jolla so everything about this landscape fit perfectly.

Sadly, my mom passed away from complications right before her first treatment. Even though our journey was hard, the opportunity to work with the doctors at Moores Cancer Center gave us hope through it all. The treatment Dr. Kato was able to offer her was eye opening; I believe could have really turned her initial diagnosis around.

Even after my mom's passing, Moores Cancer Center is still the light at the end of my tunnel. My hope is that raising money through my paintings will help them find a cure for cancer.

Mark richards BOard (sponsored by ASML)

Mark Richards, known as MR, joins the Luau as a shaper for the first time.  This board is a copy he made of the board he rode to become World championship in 1979, and subsequently in 1980, 1981 and 1982. This MR Board is an exact replica of the 1981 retro twin fin that was used on the world tour in 1981. It is 6’2”. The original colors are used and all of the logos have been specially printed by Rhema Graphics to match the 1981 board.

WALDEN BOARD

Walden Surfboards is stoked to collaborate with Philidelphia street artist Amberella (aka Amber Lynn) on our 2019 Luau and Legends surfboard. On the surface, Amberella seems like an unlikely choice for our Luau project since she's from landlocked Philadelphia and doesn't surf (yet! she's now bi-coastal splitting her time between PA and Los Angeles). We chose Amber because she has hope, courage, and love: everything the Luau is about.

Amberella is a mixed-media street artist, known for her iconic heart art. Most of her work comments on popular culture, social justice, mental health, the importance of self-care, love, and relationships. She draws inspiration from her personal story and experience with illness, heartbreak, and love, typically sharing her work in public spaces and often in abandoned or blighted communities where hope and inspiration are desperately needed. No doubt her loyal following of fans connect with her because she says publically what we are all feeling inside or need to feel. Her work always circles back to the idea that not one of us is alone—we are all one.

The Walden x Amberella Collaboration is the perfect blend of surf and street culture. This 9' Magic Model surfboard features a full Hawaiian floral inlay with Amber's iconic hearts. It reads, “I believe in you,” “keep going,” and “stoked.” Amber chose these phrases to inspire. Walden Surfboards will present a limited edition collection of Amberella surfboards soon (details coming in fall 2019).
